CS 1.6 on Mac and Linux

Counter-Strike 1.6 is a Windows game at heart, but you can play it on Mac and Linux too. There are three ways — pick the one that fits your system.

Option 1. The Steam version (Linux and Mac)

Valve ported Counter-Strike to Linux and macOS, so the Steam version installs natively on both. On Linux it’s the simplest route: install Steam, buy Counter-Strike and play. On macOS support depends on your macOS version and whether your Mac has an Intel or Apple Silicon chip — check the Steam store page before buying. Differences between Steam and free builds are explained in Steam vs non-Steam.

Option 2. Windows builds with Proton or Wine

Our builds are for Windows, but they run well through compatibility layers:

Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora…)

  1. Download a CS 1.6 build.
  2. Add the installer or hl.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game and enable Proton in its properties — or run it with Wine (wine setup.exe).
  3. Launch and choose OpenGL in video options.

macOS

Use a Wine-based app such as CrossOver: create a bottle, run the installer inside it, then start the game from the bottle. Performance is fine because CS 1.6 is very light.

Option 3. Xash3D FWGS engine

Xash3D FWGS is an open-source Half-Life engine that runs on Linux, and together with CS16Client it plays Counter-Strike 1.6 using your own game files — the same approach as CS 1.6 on Android. It’s for advanced users but gives native performance without Wine.

Which way to choose

System Easiest Free
Linux Steam version Build + Proton/Wine, or Xash3D FWGS
Mac (Intel) Steam version (check compatibility) Build + Wine-based app
Mac (Apple Silicon) Build + CrossOver Build + free Wine wrapper
