How to Create a CS 1.6 Server and Install Plugins

Want to play with friends on your own rules, or start a community? Here’s how to create a CS 1.6 server — from a quick game for friends to a full dedicated server with plugins.

Option 1. Listen server (quick, for friends)

1. Launch the game → New Game.
2. Choose a map, set max players, and start.
3. Friends on the same network join via Find Servers → LAN. Over the internet they type connect YOUR_IP:27015 — you need to forward UDP port 27015 on your router.

Good for a few friends; the server stops when you close the game.

Option 2. Dedicated server (HLDS via SteamCMD)

A dedicated server runs without the game client and stays online 24/7.

steamcmd +force_install_dir ./hlds +login anonymous +app_set_config 90 mod cstrike +app_update 90 validate +quit

Start it:

./hlds_run -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 20 -port 27015

On Windows use hlds.exe with the same parameters.

• Metamod-r — plugin loader;
• AMX Mod X — plugin platform (admins, votes, mods);
• ReAPI and ReUnion — API for plugins and support for protocol 47/48 and non-Steam clients.

Plugins go into cstrike/addons/amxmodx/plugins/ and are listed in configs/plugins.ini. Popular ones: admin menu, map voting, statistics, and mods like Zombie Plague or Jailbreak.

Hosting

Running a server at home works for small groups. For a public server with a stable ping, use a game server host or a VPS close to your players. Once your server is up, share the IP and people can join with any CS 1.6 build.
